ABOUT

We’re storytellers and interior designers. We help people and companies create spaces that reflect your unique story, as well as curate joyful and comfortable environments that become the backdrop of your new stories.

We love finding one-of-a-kind pieces and curating to compliment what you already own, including celebrating objects that have meaning for you.

To us, the most loveable spaces are eclectic and generous with colour, patterns and texture.

We’re very mindful of encouraging conscious consumption, including favouring pre-loved and antiques, and considering the lifecycle of objects and furniture. We think these also come with the best stories.

Amalia started Small Matters for rather selfish reasons, actually. She just wanted to work with kind, brilliant people who really care about what they do and work on interesting projects that matter - and that is creating beautifully designed places that offer radical hospitality and foster community.

It’s an added bonus that Amalia gets to incorporate her passion and knack for storytelling, design, repurposing spaces and sourcing unique second-hand furniture. Prior to Small Matters, Amalia was in New York for four years working in events and marketing. When she returned from the Big Apple with a professional crush on urbanist Jane Jacobs, she learnt a great deal about community-building as General Manager of a social enterprise that helped residential developers to activate spaces for new communities to flourish.

In a world where the message is often ‘bigger is better’ and growth at any cost - Amalia really believes that small and slow is more sustainable. As a 2019 alumni of Al Gore’s Climate Reality Leadership Corps training, Amalia’s mission now is to embed sustainability and climate action in all that we do.

Victoria is exactly who you want by your side when you are in a pickle. Or want to brine a pickle. Embroider a pickle. Hey, if you want to paint a huge mural of a pickle. Even if she hated pickles (which she most certainly doesn’t), she’ll turn that pickle into an opportunity and do all of these things with an incredible combination of gusto, collaboration, positivity and empathy. Victoria leads our creative vision and strategy with an innate ability to clearly define a problem, understand client needs and effectively channel creativity. Diverse experience in Melbourne and London as a designer, community-builder, cook and sustainable event consultant helps. She is also a talented artist, an embroidery and upcycling enthusiast (check out Horn Poppy), sustainability advocate and green thumb.
